Without being hyperbolic, yoga literally saved my life. Yoga continues to help me grow, shift, and change to be a better human being. Yoga guided me to my life's purpose. Yoga helps me celebrate my triumphs and do better by my mistakes. The combination of yoga and energy work has helped me shift unhealthy patterns I thought were intractable. It’s something I never thought I would do, and it was one of those things that felt a little weird to me. But in late May 2004 my body and my mind were a wreck. At the age of 24 I had had a blown out knee, a severely compromised lower back, and was in a very dark depression. But through a series of serendipitous events, I found myself in a yoga class in Brookline Massachusetts. I loved it even though it was the hardest thing I ever did. I was never someone who felt athletic or graceful. In fact when I first started yoga I was so tight I couldn’t lean forward past my waist. But, there was something in the practice that spoke deeply to my body and my spirit. So I began going to yoga 4 times a week. My knee and back pain were gone in 6 months. I could breathe again. My depression lessened and I began to find joy in my life I thought had been lost forever. I did my teacher training a year later and in 2006 took the plunge to teach yoga full time.
My background is in Power Vinyasa Yoga, but what I teach today is a synthesis of my studies of Power, Anusara, Iyengar, Forrest, and my own techniques I have discovered along the way. I have done extensive studies of human anatomy and physiology and train yoga teachers in anatomy and healthy movement patterns. In 2008 I began learning Reiki and am a Level 3 Reiki Master Teacher. My classes have become a healing blend of solid anatomically/physiologically based sequencing techniques combined with intuitive energetic understanding of the body from Reiki and other energetic traditions. I aim for my classes to be challenging, accessible, safe, fun, and most of all healing.
My spiritual practice is informed by 20 years of Buddhist studies and practice, modern self-inquiry techniques such as The Work of Byron Katie, and ancient self-inquiry practices in the style of Sri Ramana Maharshi and Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. I’ve never been one to stick to a single road, so I combine the best of what I have learned into a system of healing that is both accessible and powerful. I use many of these techniques in my “Yoga and Mindfulness for Stress Relief” program which I offer in private, group, and corporate settings.
In my private practice I specialize in working with people coming back to yoga from illness or injury and also work with yoga as a complementary technique in healing the mental/emotional system. In training and mentoring teachers, my goal is for aspiring yoga teachers to know their power, find success, and embrace their authentic voice. But in whatever I do, from training teachers to doing energy work, my goal is to be a guide not a guru. You have all the knowledge and guidance you need, you create your own healing, you are the one who makes lasting change in your life. My only job is to guide you to what you already know to be true. And if you’re reading this right now, my guess is you’re ready for the journey. It would be my great joy to share this practice with you in the best way it fits your life.
I currently live in Watertown Massachusetts with Bonsai, my Maine Coon cat. I teach in the Boston area as well as making frequent trips to teach in Maine and Connecticut. In the realm of non-yoga life, I'm a great lover of the arts and a hardcore classical music fan with a special love of Mozart. I also do speaking work for LGBTQ advocacy groups.
